NASYA – NASAL MEDICATIONS IN AYURVEDA

As the verse goes – ‘ naso hi shiraso dvaram’ nose is the gateway to the head and nasya is the best line of treatment for the diseases of the head (including ENT and eyes).

Nasya is the process of instilling of medications through the nose in various forms depending on various conditions and locations of the diseases.

Nasya can be done both as therapeutic as well as preventive therapy or a part of dinacharya or ruthucharya.

TYPES OF NASYA

According to charaka

Avapeeda nasya- the medications are in the form of svarasa (liquid extracts of various drugs)

Navana nasya- medications are sneha(oleation medications)

Dhmapana nasya-medicines in the powder form

Dhooma nasya-medicine is the smoke coming out of the burning of drugs which is to be inhaled

Pratimarsha nasya- medicine quantity is two bindupramana

Another type of classification is the marsha nasya and pratimarsha nasya

The two nasyas are to be performed with unctuous medicines. It differs in the dosage and pratimarsha nasya can be administered in all seasons whereas marsha nasya can be administered only after properly examining rogi avastha roga avastha and the kala.

Steps-

  1. Poorvakarma- mukhabyanga (oil massage on face ears)

                          Bashpa sveda -slight fomentation on face

2. Pradhana karma-instilling medicines to nostrils following all the protocol.

3. Paschath karma – kabala
