VAMANA – A DETOX THERAPY IN AYURVEDA

Vamana is a unique procedure in panchakarma. It is the best treatment for kapha dosha. It is prescribed for diseases too. Vamana is the procedure of eliminating doshas(toxins) from the body through the oral route.

Vamana means ejection, giving out or eructation of toxins from inside of the body to outside.

It is employed in diseases due to vitiated kapha either alone or in combination with kapha predominance. Madanaphala (Randia dumentorum) is an important vamana drug.

A simile is explained in the ayurveda text by Susruta. He asserts that as flower, fruits, and branches are destroyed as soon as the mother tree is destroyed. Similarly, diseases that originated due to kapha are unresponsive after the elimination of kapha through the process of vamana. It is the best line of treatment for kaphaja disease.

The strength of the digestive fire(agni) of a person is assessed before performing this therapy. The agni assessment depends upon 3 components: the capacity to eat, digest, and appetite.

Two categories of medications are given to the patient namely:

Vamana drug which initiates or produces the act of vomiting.

Vamanopaga drug is a supportive drug in the process of vomiting. They help in proceeding with the act of vomiting and are to be taken full throat. Examples are milk, juice of sugarcane, etc.
