Post Natal Care (Sutika Paricharya)

Post Natal Care, known as Sutika Paricharya in Ayurveda, focuses on supporting a mother’s recovery after childbirth. This period involves physical, emotional and hormonal changes as the body gradually returns towards its pre-pregnancy state. Appropriate care can support comfort, nourishment, rest and overall well-being during the postpartum period.

Ayurvedic post natal care traditionally emphasizes balanced nutrition, adequate rest, gentle daily routines and individualized supportive therapies. Care should be adapted to the mother’s delivery experience, current health, recovery progress and any medical needs.

Postpartum recovery varies from person to person. A personalized care plan, developed in consultation with qualified healthcare professionals, can help address individual needs while supporting safe recovery and the transition to caring for a newborn.

Ayurvedic Approach to Post Natal Care

1. Rest and Recovery

Adequate rest and gradual resumption of daily activities are important after childbirth. The mother’s recovery, delivery-related discomfort and sleep needs should guide the pace of activity. Support from family members can help reduce physical strain and provide time for rest.

2. Nutrition and Hydration

A balanced, nourishing diet supports recovery and breastfeeding when applicable. Meals should provide adequate protein, energy, fruits, vegetables and other essential nutrients. Sufficient fluids are also important, particularly for breastfeeding mothers.

3. Gentle External Therapies

Traditional Ayurvedic care may include gentle oil application or massage for relaxation and comfort. Such therapies should be selected according to the mother’s recovery and medical condition.

Massage should not be performed over unhealed surgical wounds, infected areas, painful swelling or other areas requiring medical attention. Abdominal massage and specialized postpartum procedures should only be considered after appropriate clinical assessment.

4. Emotional Well-Being

Emotional support, adequate rest and a supportive home environment are important during the postpartum period. Persistent sadness, severe anxiety, overwhelming distress or difficulty coping should be discussed promptly with a healthcare professional.

Supportive Post Natal Care

  • Follow the postpartum check-up schedule recommended by the maternity care team.
  • Maintain a balanced diet and adequate hydration.
  • Resume walking and other physical activities gradually, according to medical advice.
  • Follow the recommended care instructions for perineal or Caesarean-section wounds.
  • Seek breastfeeding support when needed.
  • Accept practical and emotional support from family members and caregivers.
  • Use herbal preparations or supplements only after confirming their suitability, especially during breastfeeding.

Post natal care should be individualized rather than based on a fixed regimen. The timing of massage, exercise and other supportive therapies depends on the type of delivery, healing progress and the mother’s overall health.

Treatment Duration and Follow-Up

Postpartum recovery continues over weeks and may take longer depending on the delivery, individual health and any complications. Follow-up appointments allow healthcare professionals to assess healing, blood pressure, bleeding, pain, emotional health and other recovery concerns.

Ayurvedic supportive care may be considered alongside appropriate maternity care when the treatments are suitable for the mother. The care plan should be reviewed as recovery progresses and adjusted according to individual needs.

Important Medical Note

Postpartum care should complement, not replace, routine medical care after childbirth. Mothers recovering from Caesarean delivery, significant blood loss, high blood pressure, infection or other complications may require specific medical guidance before beginning massage, exercise or herbal treatments.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe headache, visual disturbances, fever, severe abdominal pain, one-sided leg swelling or pain, or thoughts of harming yourself or your baby.

Herbal products and Ayurvedic formulations should be reviewed by a qualified healthcare professional before use, particularly during breastfeeding, because ingredients may affect the mother or infant and may interact with prescribed medicines.
