A notable Namboothiri family known for their Ayurvedic Netra Chikilsa, Nelliakkattu Mana, has successfully transmitted down three centuries of ancient Ayurvedic knowledge to Sreedhareeyam (treatment for eye diseases). The vaidyans (physicians) of the mana were renowned for their more than four-century-old proficiency in Ayurveda, notably in the treatment of poisons. In time, the members of the mana began to concentrate on Shalakya Tantra, a branch of Ayurveda that deals with conditions affecting the organs of the head and neck. They also dug further into Ayurveda to find the secrets of Ayurvedic eye care. The mana’s doctors looked for professional training and ways to incorporate themselves into the technological revolution as they evolved alongside the rise of allopathic treatments. The best of both worlds was combined to enhance the science of ophthalmology as they excelled in both contemporary disease descriptions and contemporary diagnostic techniques.

The current senior members of Nelliakkattu Mana, Sri N.P Narayanan Namboothiri (Chairman of Sreedhareeyam Group) and Dr. N.P.P Namboothiri (Chief Physician & Managing Director of Sreedhareeyam Group), were exposed to and mastered the fundamentals of Ayurveda and Ayurvedic Ophthalmology during their childhood, under the tutelage of their father, Parameshwaran Vaidyan, and uncle, Trivikraman Vaidyan. The Government Ayurveda College in Tripunithura served as the doctor’s place of professional training. He attained great expertise in conventional Ayurveda under the tutelage of his master and uncle, Trivikraman Namboothiri.

The upcoming generation of medical professionals at Sreedhareeyam pursued professional education and accumulated vast clinical experience under the supervision of their seniors. The Chief Medical Officer of Sreedhareeyam, Dr. Narayanan Namboothiri, earned his master’s degree in Ayurveda Ophthalmology and concentrated on “Dravya Guna Shastra” (Ayurvedic Pharmacology) to increase his understanding of herbs and their clinical uses. In order to advance her knowledge, Dr. Sreekala N.P., the deputy chief medical officer, also attended intensive professional training. She is currently in charge of the department that oversees the training of medical professionals, and she makes sure that all Sreedhareeyam doctors are thoroughly trained and have extensive clinical experience before they are approved to provide consultations. While traditional Ayurveda still significantly relies on the doctor’s skill in recognizing medical situations, the use of technology assures that all physicians are equally prepared to meet the demands of the patients.

The largest Ayurvedic eye hospital in India currently is Sreedhareeyam. The 48-acre complex includes a GMP-certified Ayurvedic medicine production facility, an Ayurvedic Research Centre, an Ayur Village, an Ayurveda paramedical college, and herbal farms in addition to an Ayurvedic eye hospital that can treat up to 300 patients. At Sreedhareeyam, a passionate group of 54 doctors, 75 healthcare professionals, and more than 120 support staff members work relentlessly to give patients great care.OP sessions are held daily in all 23 of the group’s branches, which are spread out over India. Since improper food consumption can alter digestion and result in a number of illnesses, ayurvedic therapies typically begin in the gut. A typical Ayurvedic treatment includes several stages, such as Deepana, which uses drugs that do not digest Ama but instead enhance Agni (digestive fire); Pachana, which uses herbs that digest Ama but do not directly stimulate digestive enzymes; and Shamana, which uses herbs to calm the aggravated or increased Doshas without expelling them from the body or increasing the balanced Doshas .

With a strong feeling of duty, accountability, and allegiance, we sincerely adhere to the legitimate practices described in ancient texts.

Research

In today’s global environment, research that involves collaboration between institutions is becoming more prevalent, and there is a noticeable rise in interdisciplinary centers. This collaborative approach presents numerous prospects for creating essential mass, particularly in emerging research fields. At Sreedhareeyam, we actively seek out these synergistic relationships, as they allow us to broaden our scope and make significant strides in uncharted territories of traditional medicine. Eye treatments based on Ayurveda were not well known worldwide. Nevertheless, realising that “Sarvendreeyanam Nayanam Pradhanam” (of all, the eye is the most important), we set out to investigate all possibilities for effectively utilising the vast traditional knowledge in Ayurveda passed down through generations by our family at Nelliakkattu Mana, particularly in Shalakya Tantra.

The Shalakya Tantra, which offers a thorough study of the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases that affect the organs above the neck, is described in detail in the Ayurvedic texts Sushrut Samhita, Charak Samhita, and Ashtang Hruday. As per the Ayurvedic texts, the eyes are vulnerable to around 76 ailments, whereas the ears are prone to 25 distinct types of conditions. The nose can be affected by as many as 18 diseases, while the lips are susceptible to 11 types of ailments. Shalakya Tantra provides solutions for all such diseases. This ancient practice is not only concerned with providing immediate treatment for the conditions but also emphasizes follow-up care to ensure complete eradication of the disease.

As a result, Shalakya Tantra is considered one of the most effective approaches for treating illnesses related to the upper portion of the body, above the neck. Ayurveda has a branch known as Shalakya Tantra that specializes in treating ailments above the neck. Sreedhareeyam has specialised knowledge in Shalakya Tantra, especially Netra Chikitsa (Treatment of Eye Diseases), which is aided by a vast traditional knowledge base passed down through generations in the family and improved through clinical experience. While each of our doctors has a professional degree, they are also all well-versed in the ancient body of knowledge known as Nellikkattu Mana. Through ongoing research and clinical study facilities, the efficacy of our medications and treatment methods is continuously assessed. At Sreedhareeyam, we identify illnesses using conventional techniques while also verifying them using the most up-to-date diagnostic tools. This strategy reduces reliance on any one system and enables us to treat both common and rare diseases with unmatched success.

The neck and head organs are treated specifically by the Shalakya Tantra using techniques like Nasyam, Dhoomapanam, Gandoosham, Kabalam, Shirodhara, Shirovasthi, Anjanam, Tharpanam, and Pratisaranam. With traditional Ayurvedic textbooks providing a variety of techniques for proper care and prophylactic measures for the eyes, ayurvedic ophthalmology has demonstrated to be extremely effective in treating infectious and degenerative eye diseases. Every year, Sreedhareeyam, the only super-specialty eye hospital in Ayurveda, treats about 52,000 out-patients and 4800 in-patients.
