Alzheimer’s Disease

Overview

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that causes gradual brain atrophy and loss of brain cells. It typically begins slowly and worsens over time and is the most common cause of dementia.

As the condition progresses, individuals may experience memory loss, language difficulties, disorientation, mood changes, reduced motivation, difficulty with self-care, and behavioral disturbances.

Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease

Early Stage

  • Occasional forgetfulness
  • Difficulty remembering names of family or friends
  • Subtle changes noticed mainly by close relatives
  • Mild confusion in unfamiliar situations

Middle Stage

  • Increased difficulty remembering recent events
  • Deepening confusion in daily situations
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Difficulty recognizing surroundings

Late Stage

  • Severely reduced ability to think and reason
  • Speech difficulties
  • Repetition of the same conversations
  • Increased anxiety, paranoia, or aggressive behavior

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease is not clearly understood. Approximately 70% of the risk is believed to be genetic, involving multiple genes.

  • Genetic predisposition
  • History of head injury
  • Depression
  • Hypertension

Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, Alzheimer’s disease is correlated with Smriti Bhramsha (loss of memory). It is believed to arise due to consumption of unwholesome food dominated by Tamas and Rajas, irregular physical activities, and vitiation of Doshas affecting both the mind and body.

Ayurvedic Treatment Approach

Alzheimer’s disease is considered a Yapya Roga in Ayurveda, meaning it can be managed but not completely cured. Early diagnosis and timely intervention can significantly improve quality of life.

  • Panchakarma therapies
  • Ayurvedic medications
  • Yoga and supportive lifestyle practices
  • Long-term management to slow disease progression
